RV toilets are simple, but when they act up, you notice right away. These are the seven problems we see most, what causes them and how they’re fixed.
The seven issues
- Won’t hold water in the bowl — a worn or dirty flush-valve seal. Cleaning or replacing the seal usually fixes it.
- Leaks at the base — a failed floor flange seal. The toilet needs to be removed and re-sealed; check the floor for water damage.
- Leaks behind the toilet — a cracked water valve or loose supply line.
- Odors — a bad seal, a vent problem, or low water in the bowl.
- Clogs — non-RV toilet paper or too little water. Use RV-safe paper and plenty of water.
- Pedal or handle sticking — mineral buildup or a worn mechanism.
- Weak flush — low water pressure, a clogged inlet screen or a failing valve.
Prevent problems
- Use RV-safe toilet paper and tank treatment
- Keep water in the bowl
- Dump tanks regularly and flush them
- Lubricate seals with a seal conditioner
