Doing your own RV maintenance can save money — until a shortcut causes damage. These common DIY mistakes are easy to avoid once you know them.
Using the wrong products
- Dish soap that strips protection
- Petroleum cleaners on rubber roofs
- Car antifreeze in RV plumbing
- Household toilet paper in the black tank
Skipping torque specs
Lug nuts, hitch bolts and fittings need the right torque. Too loose or too tight both cause failures.
Ignoring age
Tires, batteries, sealant and detectors age even when unused. Replace by age, not only by appearance.
Pressure-washing the wrong places
High pressure on seals, decals, vents and electrical connections can force water in.
Doing it right
Keep a checklist, use RV-specific products, and leave gas, electrical and structural work to a technician. See motorhome maintenance checklist.
