How Often Do Things Break on an RV?

If it feels like something on your RV always needs attention, you’re not imagining it. An RV combines a vehicle with a house — plumbing, electrical, appliances, climate systems — and then shakes the whole thing down the highway. Here’s why repairs come up, and how to make them less frequent.

Why RVs need more repairs than cars

  • Constant vibration. Every mile flexes the body and loosens fittings and connections.
  • Many systems in one. Engine, chassis, generator, water, LP gas, 12V and 120V electrical, A/C and appliances all need care.
  • Long idle periods. Seals dry out, batteries drain and fuel ages while an RV sits.
  • Sun and weather. UV breaks down roof sealant, tires and finishes.

What tends to fail first

In our shop, the most common issues are roof and seal leaks, slide-out adjustments, house battery and charging problems, appliance faults, awning damage and brakes or bearings on towables.

How to break less often

  1. Do a yearly service and a pre-trip check.
  2. Keep the roof sealed.
  3. Use and exercise systems — run the generator, slides and appliances regularly.
  4. Store the RV covered or shaded when you can.
  5. Fix small issues before a trip, not during one.

Proactive is cheaper than reactive

Most expensive RV repairs start as a small problem that went unnoticed. A professional inspection catches them while they’re still small.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for new RVs to need repairs?

Yes. New RVs often need adjustments in the first season as parts settle. Keep a list and have it handled together.

How can I reduce RV repairs?

Yearly maintenance, a sealed roof, healthy batteries and regular use of every system.

Can you handle several repairs in one visit?

Yes — one work order can cover the chassis, the coach systems and the body.
