How often to wash an RV depends on where it’s stored and where it travels — but in Southern California’s sun, regular washing is one of the cheapest ways to protect the finish.
A simple guideline
- After every trip — especially coastal or desert trips
- Monthly if stored outdoors
- Every few months if stored covered or indoors
- Right away after bird droppings, tree sap or bug splatter
Why it matters
Dirt, salt air, sap and droppings break down paint and gel coat in the sun. Regular washing keeps oxidation and black streaks from setting in.
Wash the right way
- Use an RV-safe soap — not dish soap, which strips protection.
- Wash from the top down, rinsing often.
- Use a soft brush on an extension pole.
- Dry it to prevent water spots.
- Clean the roof with a cleaner made for your roof type.
Add protection
Wax or ceramic coating makes washing easier and protects the finish between washes. See RV detailing.

Should I wash the roof?
Yes, with a cleaner made for your roof type, and check the seals while you’re up there.
Can I pressure-wash my RV?
Gently, keeping distance from seals, decals and windows.
