RV Roof Delamination: What It Is, Why It Happens and How It’s Repaired

El Toro RV Service technician kneeling on an RV roof during a roof inspection in Orange, CA

Delamination is when the layers of an RV wall or roof separate. It shows up as waves, bubbles or soft spots — and it almost always starts with water.

What delamination is

Many RV walls and some roofs are built in layers: an outer skin (often fiberglass) bonded to wood or composite panels and framing. When water reaches the bond, it weakens and the layers separate.

Why it happens

  • Failed roof sealant
  • Leaks around windows, vents and fixtures
  • Long-term moisture exposure
  • Impact or collision damage that breaks seals

Signs

  • Waves, ripples or bubbles in the sidewall
  • Spongy or soft spots when pressed
  • Separating seams
  • Stains inside near the affected area

How it's repaired

  1. Inspect and find the water source.
  2. Repair or replace damaged decking and framing.
  3. Re-bond or replace the outer skin.
  4. Seal and refinish.
  5. Fix the original leak.

Prevent it

Keep the roof and seals maintained, and inspect every fall. See free fall roof inspection and RV roof repair.

Frequently asked questions

Can delamination be fixed?

Yes. The repair addresses both the water source and the damaged wall or roof structure.

Is delamination covered by insurance?

Usually not when it’s caused by long-term leaks; sometimes yes when it follows a sudden event like a collision.

Does delamination keep spreading?

As long as water keeps getting in, yes.
