Top Mistakes New RV Owners Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Buying your first RV is exciting — and the first season is when most expensive surprises happen. Nearly all of them are avoidable. These are the mistakes we see most often from new owners, and the simple habits that prevent them.

1. Ignoring the roof

The roof is where most RV water damage starts. Sealant around vents, skylights and seams dries out in the sun, cracks and lets water in long before you see a stain. Inspect it at least once a year, and after any branch strike or hail.

2. Trusting tire tread instead of tire age

RV tires often age out before they wear out. Sun and long parked periods break down the rubber. Check the date code on each sidewall, keep them at the pressure the RV’s tire placard calls for, and cover them when parked.

3. Skipping the walk-around

  • Antenna, awning and steps retracted
  • Slides in and locked
  • Hitch, safety chains and breakaway cable connected (towables)
  • Lights and turn signals working
  • Compartment doors closed and latched

4. Forgetting the house batteries

House batteries go flat in storage from small parasitic loads. A battery disconnect, a maintainer, or a lithium upgrade with a battery management system keeps them healthy.

5. Overloading

Water, gear and passengers add up fast. Know your RV’s cargo carrying capacity and weigh the rig fully loaded at least once.

6. Waiting for something to break

A yearly service — roof, seals, brakes, bearings, generator, appliances and batteries — costs a fraction of a repair after a failure. See RV repair and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most expensive mistake new owners make?

Letting a small roof or seal leak go unnoticed. Water damage to walls, floors and decking is far costlier than a re-seal.

How often should a new RV be serviced?

At least once a year, plus a check before any long trip.

Can El Toro look over a new-to-me RV?

Yes — our RV inspections cover the roof, chassis, systems and body.
