How to Change an RV Tire Safely

Toy hauler travel trailer moved into the El Toro RV Service bay with a forklift

A flat on an RV is a bigger deal than a flat on a car. The weight, size and roadside risk mean safety comes first. Here’s how to handle it — and when to call for help instead.

First: get safe

  1. Signal and pull as far off the road as possible onto firm, level ground.
  2. Turn on hazards and set out reflective triangles.
  3. Get passengers away from traffic.
  4. Chock the wheels that are staying on the ground.

When not to do it yourself

  • Large motorhomes and dual rear wheels often need heavy equipment and a roadside service
  • Soft or sloped ground
  • A busy freeway shoulder
  • If you don’t have the right jack, rated for the weight

Changing a towable tire

  1. Loosen the lug nuts slightly while the tire is on the ground.
  2. Use a ramp-style tire changer or a jack rated for the trailer, placed on the axle or frame where the maker specifies — never under the suspension springs.
  3. Remove the flat and mount the spare.
  4. Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern, lower the trailer, then torque to spec.
  5. Re-check lug torque after the first 50 miles.

Prevent the next one

Check pressure before every trip, replace tires by age, and have bearings and brakes serviced on schedule. See trailer repair.

Frequently asked questions

Should I change a motorhome tire myself?

Usually not. Large motorhome tires are heavy and need special equipment — call a roadside service.

Why do RV tires blow out?

Underinflation, overloading and age are the most common causes.

How old is too old for RV tires?

Check the date code and the tire maker’s guidance; many RV tires age out before the tread wears.
