RV Roof Maintenance in Orange County’s Climate

Technician working on top of a tall motorhome inside the El Toro RV shop

Orange County’s sun is great for camping and hard on RV roofs. UV breaks down roof sealant and membranes faster than in cooler climates, and the first rains of the season find every crack. Here’s how to keep your roof — and everything under it — protected.

What the sun does

UV dries out and cracks the self-leveling sealant around vents, skylights, antennas and A/C units, and ages EPDM and TPO membranes. Coastal air and dust add to the wear.

A simple routine

  1. Inspect the roof at least every 12 months, and after wind or branch strikes.
  2. Wash it with a cleaner made for your roof type.
  3. Touch up or replace cracked sealant promptly.
  4. Check vents, skylights and A/C gaskets.
  5. Keep the roof shaded or covered in storage when possible.

Know your roof type

EPDM rubber, TPO, fiberglass and aluminum roofs each need different products and care. Read types of RV roofs and their maintenance.
