A long trip puts every system to work for days at a time. A pre-trip service — booked two to three weeks ahead — is the best insurance against a breakdown far from home.
The pre-trip checklist
- Tires: pressure, tread and age, including the spare
- Brakes and, on towables, wheel bearings
- Engine oil, coolant, belts and hoses (motorhomes)
- Batteries and charging system
- Generator service and load test
- Roof and seal check
- LP leak test and appliances
- Water system and water heater
- Lights, turn signals and brake lights
- Hitch, safety chains and breakaway (towables)
- Smoke, CO and LP detectors
Book early
Two to three weeks gives time to order any parts the inspection turns up.
Pack the essentials
