Dust, pollen and bird droppings can cut a solar panel’s output noticeably. Cleaning helps — as long as you use products and tools that don’t damage the panel’s surface or the roof around it.
Safe choices
- Plain water, ideally soft or deionized to avoid spots
- A mild, non-abrasive soap such as a gentle RV wash
- A soft brush or sponge on an extension pole
- Microfiber cloths
Avoid
- Abrasive pads and scouring powders
- Harsh solvents and petroleum-based cleaners
- High-pressure washers aimed directly at panels or junction boxes
- Cleaners that aren’t safe for your roof material
How to clean them
- Clean early or late in the day when panels are cool.
- Rinse loose dust first.
- Wash gently with mild soap and a soft brush.
- Rinse and let air-dry or wipe with microfiber.
- While you’re up there, check mounts and sealant around brackets.
Panels and roof together
Every bracket is a roof penetration. During detailing we clean panels and inspect mounts and seals. See RV detailing and solar upgrades.

How often should I clean RV solar panels?
Whenever you see dust buildup or output drops — often every few weeks during heavy use.
Can I pressure-wash solar panels?
Avoid aiming a pressure washer directly at panels or connectors.
