Winter Camping: How to Prepare Your RV for a Cozy Getaway

Class A motorhome pulling up to the shop door at El Toro RV Service

From Big Bear to the high desert, winter RV trips from Southern California can mean freezing nights. A little preparation keeps the RV warm, the water flowing and the trip relaxing.

Heat

  • Have the furnace serviced and tested before the trip
  • Carry enough LP — furnaces use a lot in the cold
  • Insulate roof vents and windows
  • Use RV-rated electric heat on shore power to stretch LP

Water

  • Use a heated fresh-water hose, or travel with a full fresh tank and disconnect at night
  • Run tank heaters if your RV has them
  • Keep cabinet doors open so warm air reaches plumbing
  • Know how to winterize quickly if temperatures drop more than expected

Power

Cold reduces battery capacity. Start with fully charged, healthy batteries — or consider a cold-weather-capable lithium upgrade. See cold-weather battery care.

Safety

  • Test CO and LP detectors
  • Check tire pressure — it drops in the cold
  • Carry chains if your route requires them

Before you go

A pre-trip service covers the furnace, batteries, tires and seals. See RV repair and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

They can below freezing, especially overnight. Heat, insulation and tank heaters help.

How much LP does a furnace use?

It varies by RV and temperature; plan for much more than in mild weather.

Can you service my furnace before the trip?

Yes.
