If your RV will see freezing temperatures — mountain storage or winter trips — winterizing protects the plumbing and water heater from cracking. These are the essential steps.
The essential steps
- Drain the fresh, gray and black tanks.
- Drain the water heater and put it in bypass.
- Open low-point drains and faucets to drain the lines.
- Pump RV antifreeze (non-toxic, for potable systems) through every faucet, shower and the toilet until it runs pink.
- Pour antifreeze into the P-traps.
- Remove or protect water filters.
Don't forget
- The ice maker and washing machine lines, if equipped
- Outdoor showers
- The water pump
- House batteries — charge them and use a maintainer or disconnect
De-winterizing in spring
Flush the antifreeze, sanitize the fresh water system, take the water heater out of bypass and check for leaks.
Do you need it in Southern California?
Coastal and valley storage rarely freezes, but mountain and desert storage can. When in doubt, ask. See RV repair and maintenance.
