The Complete Guide to Your RV Water Heater

Hot showers and clean dishes depend on a part most owners never think about until it stops working. Here’s how RV water heaters work, how to maintain them and what to do when they don’t heat.

Types of RV water heaters

  • Tank heaters (often 6 or 10 gallons) heated by LP gas, electric or both
  • Tankless / on-demand heaters that heat water as it flows

Routine maintenance

  1. Drain and flush the tank to remove sediment.
  2. Inspect or replace the anode rod if your heater uses one (steel-tank models do; aluminum tanks don’t).
  3. Check the pressure-relief valve.
  4. Keep the burner area and exterior vent clear of insects and debris.
  5. Use the bypass when winterizing so antifreeze doesn’t fill the tank.

Common problems

  • No hot water on gas — LP supply, igniter or thermocouple issues
  • No hot water on electric — the switch, a breaker or a failed heating element
  • Rotten-egg smell — often a reaction with the anode rod
  • Dripping relief valve — sometimes normal expansion, sometimes a failing valve

Safety first

Never turn on the electric element with the tank empty — it can burn out. Leave LP burner and gas-valve work to a technician. See RV appliance and water system service.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I flush my RV water heater?

At least once a year, more often with hard water.

Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

It’s often a reaction between water and the anode rod. Flushing and sometimes changing the anode helps.

Can you convert my RV to tankless?

In many RVs, yes. We’ll check fit, gas supply and venting.
